A MOVEMENT HAS BEGUN

Friday, September 18, 2020

Today, I lead my first native seed collecting day as part of my organizational role with Sustain DuPage. It was super fun and we had a great turnout! It's incredible to teach others the importance of native plants and the task of collecting their seeds.

Native plants have surprisingly deep roots, allowing them to access groundwater from deep below the ground. That's why you'll rarely se the effects of a drought in a prairie (unlike a typical American lawn). Prairies are also great carbon sinks, which is crucial in terms of combatting climate change.

Illinois is known as the Prairie State, yet there is so little of this beautiful ecosystem remaining.

That is why this project of mine is so important. We must reconnect with our native roots. We must reincorporate these remnant communities back into our urban world.
